Transformative Justice & Community Accountability
‘Transformative Justice is a political framework and approach for responding to violence, harm and abuse. At its most basic, it seeks to respond to violence without creating more violence and/or engaging in harm reduction to lessen the violence’. (Mia Mingus, 2018)
Transformative Justice is one aspect of Abolitionism that builds and implements alternative liberatory strategies that do not rely on the police, criminal legal system, prisons, and interconnected systems of oppression within healthcare, education, and social care.
It is a framework that encompasses accountability, prevention of harm, healing, working towards safety, and building community strength and resources.
RTN works within a Transformative Justice framework to prevent, address and heal from harm within the Network, within the therapy profession, therapeutic relationship and systematically.
Members are resourced to develop skills of accountability, however, there is an expectation that individuals will take an active role in self-development as part of their ongoing anti-oppressive praxis.
The application form becomes a contract that the applicant actively engages with and will be drawn upon if an individual is invited into an accountability process.
Members, Co-Directors, or people involved with RTN who cause harm to a group or individual may be invited to engage in a process of accountability and reparations.
Accountability with RTN centres those who have been harmed, however all parties are offered holding as this work does not function as a punitive measure, but as a generative healing, community practice.
